Bruichladdich:- (Brae on the shore) was establishedin 1881, by Robert William and John Harvey, and has gone through a succession of owners. Mothballed in 1995 and
recently bought from Invergordon Distillers Ltd. by a private consortium, it reopened in May 2001. In earlier years barley was shipped to the pier at Bruichladdich, and then
transferred to the distillery by horse and cart and off-loaded to the Barley loft by tying
the socks to a rope which was looped through a pulley block, and the other end attatched to a horse which when moved forward; pulled the sock up to the level of the loft opening. A visit is highly recommended since all the original plant has been restored and is in full use, producing Bruichladdich's distinctive spirit. Bruichladdich is traditionallyavery lightly peated whisky with phenollevels of 1 O p.p.m.., however as weil as this original, they are now producing a new spirit to be named 'Port-Charlotte' at 40 p.p.m.
Bruichladdich has some very ambitious plans for the future, with the development of a CraftlPottery Centre, Restaurant and Whisky School. Production Director,.- James
